The registration for the Caffeine Beer Competition is live. Go to http://beerscores.com/comp_details.aspx?id=103 and register. This is a free competition to paid IBU members and the turn in date is Nov 9th. All BJCP styles are welcomed, but please make sure you feature the coffee or tea in your style. Our special guests from September’s meeting, Jason from Free Range Brewing and Matt from Pure Intentions Coffee, will be helping judge. Rest assured, they will be looking for the way coffee or tea are highlighted in your entry.
July is coming fast which means the IBU Summer Competition is fast approaching.

The deadline for entries to the Rye Beer Summer Competition is July 13th. Please bring your (2) 12oz bottles to the club meeting that night with the appropriate labels attached with a rubber band. Also, remember caps must be the gold type with no writing or ornamentation anywhere. If you don’t have any, please ask a fellow brewer, stop by a homebrew store, or ask a board member. We are happy to share.
In our efforts to make the club competitions more in line with outside ones, we are using beerscores.com to register all entries. There is no charge to paid club members. Registration is quick and easy and upon completion, labels will be ready for you to print and cut out.
Judging will take place in the week that follows and winners will be announced at the club social event Thursday, July 23rd at Lake Norman Brewing. We will kick it off at 6:30PM and we will be providing finger food. We invite our rye entrants to bring some of their competition beers for the club to sample as we announce the results.
The first quarterly internal club competition this year was the Spice Rack Challenge. Basically, the idea was to brew a beer that featured/highlighted a spice from your spice rack/cabinet. We had 12 entries from club members, which was a great turnout for an internal competition. These competitions are free to enter and are open only to club members.
The drop off deadline was Monday, April 13, and judging was done on Saturday, April 18. And the results are in! On behalf of the judging panel, wehave to say these were some fantastic beers. Several were on par with some commercial beers we’ve had. Great job to all who submitted beers.

Last night we had an AMAZING turnout for the March 2015 IBU meeting. Evan from Wicked Weed was in the house and gave a thorough education session on Sour beers and barrel aging. He also let us sample a few sour and funky beers and gave out some swag. Also, thanks to all who brought donations for the Ada Jenkins Loaves and Fishes food drive. A special shout out to Mark, the owner of Ultimate Ales for getting Wicked Weed to join us.
